Creating the Bag
Cut a piece of folded newspaper (2 layers) to 15.5"w x 8.25"h.
Open the newspaper and using a glue stick, apply a glue "border"
about 1" wide around all outside edges. Fold the newspaper up
again so now the 2 layers of newspaper are stuck together.
In order to avoid tearing the newspaper, put a ruler against
each of the fold line spots as shown in Fig. 1. Lift the edge
of the paper up and press against ruler to create a crease.
Remove ruler and press down on creased line. Continue to do
all the other crease lines. Note: newspaper is easily torn -
if you used a stylus or bone folder be careful.
Dribble some gesso on one side of your newspaper and using
a credit card smear the gesso all over in a very thin coating.
Some areas can be bare. When dry, repeat on the other side.
Cut a piece of colored tissue paper approx 15.5"w x 6.5"h.
Brush a thin coating of Matte Medium onto the gessoed surface
of your newspaper starting on one side. Place tissue paper down,
more or less matching the side and bottom edge. (the top edge
will be folded down later and hide any unevenness). Continue
brushing on the Medium and pressing the tissue paper down until
you get to the other side. Allow to air dry or use a hairdryer.
Cut 2 pieces of cardstock, 1"h x 4.25"w and adhere to edge
of the fold line at the top. This will reinforce the top edge
where the handles go. Place glue or double sided tape on the
total length of the 1.25" fold-over section. Fold down.
Turn over and decorate the outside of the bag.
